Writing Champ 2026
A single writing prompt, marked against a structured rubric set before the competition begins.
Who can enter
Writing Champ is open to every student, including those who do not attend Melbourne Tutorials. Entrants compete inside their own year level category, so a Grade 3 student is never ranked against a Year 8 student.
Entrants in this category are ranked only against each other, and all three prizes are awarded inside the category.

What the competition looks like
Students respond to a given writing prompt. Every submission is evaluated against a predetermined, structured marking rubric, so each piece is judged on exactly the same criteria. The competition is an opportunity for students to show both writing skill and creativity.
- One given writing prompt
- Marked against a structured rubric
- Judged on skill and on creativity
- Sat at our Werribee campus, on a date confirmed in the registration form

Three prizes in every category
Each of the three year level categories has its own first, second and third place, so there are nine prizes in Writing Champ altogether.

Rules and important information
Please read these before registering. Entering Writing Champ means accepting all nine.
All question papers, answer sheets, writing prompts, marking guides and other assessment materials remain the property of Melbourne Tutorials. These materials will not be returned, shared or disclosed to students or parents.
Parents will be informed only of their child’s marks and the highest marks achieved in the relevant competition category. Individual questions, incorrect responses, completed answer sheets and detailed assessment records will not be provided.
Official results will be announced on 30 November 2026. Individual results will be communicated to parents separately, on a date advertised in advance.
The entry fee is non refundable if a registered student is unable to attend or participate, whatever the reason. No alternative sitting will be arranged.

Students must arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, bring sharpened pencils or pens, erasers and rulers as appropriate, and follow supervisors’ instructions. Late arrivals may not receive additional time.
