Who can enter

Math Champ is open to every student, including those who do not attend Melbourne Tutorials. Entrants compete inside their own year level category, so a Grade 3 student is never ranked against a Year 8 student.

Level A
Grade 3 to Grade 4

Entrants in this category are ranked only against each other, and all three prizes are awarded inside the category.

Level B
Grade 5 to Grade 6

Entrants in this category are ranked only against each other, and all three prizes are awarded inside the category.

Level C
Year 7 to Year 8

Entrants in this category are ranked only against each other, and all three prizes are awarded inside the category.

What the competition looks like

Students complete a multiple choice assessment designed to test mathematical reasoning, problem solving skills and conceptual understanding. The competition encourages students to apply what they already know to unfamiliar and challenging problems, rather than to repeat a drilled procedure.

  • Multiple choice, sat under supervision
  • Mathematical reasoning and problem solving
  • Unfamiliar problems, not drilled procedures
  • Sat at our Werribee campus, on a date confirmed in the registration form
